First VOLTA RTTY contest. 80 & 15M were useable
but no one there. Plenty of Italian stations on.
20M was a lot of work but opened up well for me later
in the day. JAs, ZLs, KH6s, 4X were on. Only a handful
of SA stations. As you would think, this is really an
EU contest - with EU stations having big SNs. Overall,
good participation for a RTTY contest. Had fun.

Quite difficult with 100 watts and a long wire. The highlight was putting 4Z5IW
in the log! Some great signals from southern EU.

Amplifier down for repair, less than optimal conditions = lots of repeats.
Other than NAQP, I seldom choose to operate low power. Not only is it a lesson
in humility and patience, it verifies that a major percentage of stations
should spend far more on their receive capabilities. I had less than 50
contacts, four hours into the contest. Ate lunch, took a nap, and far better
results, when I returned.
Thanks to all for the contacts, as even with low power, I almost tripled my
score, from last year.

hard to print stations there so I retired for the evening.

Despite placing a decent signal on 15M as reported by the west coast skimmers,
on saturday afternoon,I only got 2 Q's on this band.
40m Mt appeared to be in good shape, but was too tired.

Just a few moments during other weekend activities from my flex lab in fremont,
wanted to check this one out, get a feel for activity/exchange flow, etc.

Was still able to get a few q's in from over the pond, GW, DL, IK..

certainly not the most attended rtty event, but could be a really fun one..
love the name of the test.

Flex 6700/N1MM/MMTTY/2tone, Alpha99, SteppIR dipole.

Flex platform really shines in RTTY contesting.

Late start in the Volta RTTY test this year, didn't get started until early
Saturday evening. 20 and 40 meters seemed to be in fair shape, and was able to
make about 60 Q's before calling it a night. Most of the stations I worked were
Northern Stateside, Canadian stations, and a few EU's. Woke up and tried to get
on 40 at 12:30 A.M but the band was pretty noisy and remained that way until I
went back to bed around 3AM. Was back at it at 6:30 Sunday morning, there were
a few North American stations to work so added a few more to the log. Went to
20 meters and the band was barely open but managed to work a few EU's. Heard
Eastern Russians in the mix but was not able to work them. As always, had the
pleasure of working Dave NJ4F and Ted K7OM. Looking forward to next years Volta
RTTY, thanks to all who worked me.

I was wondering if something was wrong with the scoring so high. I was
surprised at the point total. Looking at the log I found that point scores
ranged from 2 pts to 30 pts per QSO according to the country. I have the
correct log and it is set up ok.

Pushed harder than I thought I would. Predicted a score of 20-million and ended
up with 60 million. Gotta like that, without 15M in the mix at all and 80M
producing a single contact.

A look ahead at next weekend in the latest Zone Zero contesting episode --

Better than expected when SFI=69 K=2. 20M open to US West coast right through to
23:30. Very poor to JA and nothing from VK/ZL. The points per QSO was high on 40
and 80, so overall my score was 2x my 2016 score. Very happy!

Lost a couple of hours to thunder and lightning in the area. The a few hours
later, it rained very hard and with really strong winds it drove the water up
under the palapa. Of course the main areas where it leaked where over the
laptop and the amp. So I ended up covering everything with a shower curtain
till it abated a bit. I also had a few hardware/software glitches this time
around. I really am not sure if AFSK with a signalink is the way to go. Twice
settings changed on their own and everything quit working. Also a coax died
right after I changed bands from 15 to 20 halfway through the contest. Luckily
I had spares.

K4GMH   SOAB HP   101,638,6562017-05-16 15:41:16
Thanks for the QSOs and ARI for the putting on the Contest.

That was fun until the station locked up eight hours into the Contest. The
problem turned out to be a ground to the SO2R box not in place. I was already
committed to a full day on Sunday (Mother's Day in USA) so wasn't enthused to
trouble shoot. Figured this was a omen to just rest up for tomorrow.

Bands that were open were okay. Low bands were quiet finally as had a lot of
rain/storms leading up to the Contest. Twenty was good with nice
participation.

Definitely hope to do better next year.

Mike, K4GMH

This was a last minute remote operation from NX6T.
I spent most of my operating time in the VOLTA RTTY contest but couldn't
resist spending a little time on CW as well in the CQ-M GiG.
Band conditions SUCKED on 15 meters and 20 meters wasn't much better.
40-meters is where it all happened. With the help of an F-10 NOW key,
I was able to run a frequencies more effectively this time.

I wrote up this operation on the WQ6X Contest Blog: http://WQ6X.Blogspot.com
