That was brutal. Got to 100 Qs and stopped. 40 was so noisy and didn't even
want to try 80.

K3, KPA500, tribander and dipole.

Had to cut out of the party early, but I wanted to extend my most heartfelt
thanks to all the SSB sprinters who were spending time helping new sprint
operators understand exchange. I had a good time, great to hear some big
scores, (man some of these guys can rock it on SSB) and look forward to seeing
the results.

Had a major murphy moment that caused me to loose audio for a bit over the
remote. my apologize for dropping a few dead carriers on folks while I figured
it out. kind of took the wind out of my sails but had to qrt early anyway..

Well - started out OK on 20. Went to 40 and at 0116z, the dreaded noise started
and that was about it for me. Dang noise comes on about S-9+10 and makes it
impossible to try and CQ or hear anybody.

Thanks for the Q's and 73
N8XX   Single Op QRP   1,8902014-03-15 20:57:09
Conditions seemed good. Too good on 40, few stations cam to 80 until much later
than typical, probably because 40 held up for so long.
AG2AA   Single Op LP   2,0442014-03-15 21:01:39
I am not a big fan of the QSY format but still had fun, even being walked on by
ops that I know could hear me but choose to ignore the frequency being in use.

Only had a little over an hour while dealing with a crying baby causing too much
QRM! Not a big sprint fan but wish I had more time at the beginning on my
tribander. K9PG was worked on 3 bands for a sweep!

We keep saying it, but this contest needs an infusion of operators.. Worked a
bunch of VA Qso party OP's giving HUGE numbers, so logged those.. Also a lot of
newer ops who sounded like they were having a GREAT time, so thats encouraging.

Boy, conditions on 20m were good but didn't last, 40m was good throughout, but
80m I could get NOTHING going, super slow rate, and wasn't really hearing
stations, I tried both antennas and all beverages, just not happening tonite.

Congrats to Bill, K4XS and KW8N Bob, both great jobs, they ran away on 40/80m!

Great to work a LOT of the Wednesday CWT and Thursday NS guys, and of course
the regular sprinters, you guys are great ops!

Highlight of nite was working ANOTHER SD station, KK0SD, Joe, one of the very
few times I work SD in a Sprint! Thanks Joe!!

Thanks for the fun, God Bless, Todd WD0T
K4XS   Single Op HP   12,2402014-03-15 21:10:38
Ugggh! At times I felt like the old Maytag repairman. I need to move back to
KH6 to break 300 Q barrier. I remember when 255 Qs would not even break the
top ten for this contest.
K6GHA   Single Op LP   3,1622014-03-15 21:12:19
Conditions didn't seem too favorable this go round. Would have liked to have
done better, but just couldn't get past the noise.
Hope to have passed the baton better in the race, but had a few lost and
dropped contacts.
N3BB   Single Op LP   2,9922014-03-15 21:19:04
First operation on SSB for many years. Thanks to K5NZ for the opportunity.
Actually was not able to remember how to adjust the mic settings for a while it
had been so long. The camaraderie was cool, with a bit more time to kibitz. Had
fun. First time ever to hear many of the actual voices of long-time radio

The shack was torn apart trying to get some new
equipment to work. No time for fine tuning - I
just jumped in and adjusted on-the-fly. I had
problems with my recorded CQ, and some Broadcast
overload on 80m. It didn't matter, since nobody
answered my pipsqueek CQs, and nobody could hear
my QRP signal on 80m. Fun!

I made more QSOs on every band than last year -
so I improved! 20m was good, 40m felt like sliding
down a slippery slope, and 80m was the brick wall
at the bottom.

Seems like more and more new folks are joining in the Sprint fun each time.
Static crashes made for a little bit of trouble but overall not bad
And there were enough clear frequencies above 3800 to facilitate Sprint
operation, although the same stations seemed to wind up on each one of them.
N7MZW   Single Op LP   2,7902014-03-15 21:35:22
Three hours and eight minutes of op time from Cheyenne, WY using a Kenwood
TS-950SD, Heil ProSet with HC-5 element and a G5RV home brew flat top up 50
feet running N-S at 6,053 feet elevation. Had fun. Thanks for the contacts!
W9RE   Single Op HP   9,1562014-03-15 21:40:09
Lot's of newbies but a lot of the oldies have disappeared. The Russian contest
siphoned some for sure. Thanks to all who came out despite noisy conditions on
40 and especially 80.

Missed LA and SC that I heard but worked all others heard. Did get a VE5
late on 40.

Only worked about 5 stations low on 80.
K9PG   Single Op LP   8,5502014-03-15 21:59:23
Gotta figure out a way to get people active in this one again.... it was once
the greatest 4 hours in contesting. Stopped to make a sandwich in the last
K9NW(@K9UWA)   Single Op LP   6902014-03-16 05:01:06
This event still suffers from lack of sprinters. Don't know what the answer

Thanks to Mike, K5NZ, for inviting me to join a team. I always like to be on a
team as it keeps me in the chair for the full 4 hours. Conditions were not
great with high noise levels on all bands and frequent static crashes,
participation seemed like it is still decreasing, and 75 meters..... well, it
is just 75 meters.

Thanks for the Qs.

K5MXG   Single Op LP   3,2402014-03-16 06:34:23
Thanks to K5NZ for the addition to the team...

Thanks to my noisy QTH I couldn't hear much on 80m. Worked 40m until my ears
were bleeding. I really have to learn cw..

Brutal but fun.
N5DO   Single Op LP   7,3602014-03-16 07:06:40
Thanks to Mike, K5NZ, for organizing the "Lid Lizards." It helps to
get more people involved.

I was pleased to read this in the Rules for for the Phone Sprint:
"suggested frequencies . . . 3770 - 3790 and 3805 - 3825 (avoid DX
window)." I'm afraid most people did not read that change. Of my 40 QSOs
on 80M, only 5 were below 3790. There was lots of room there, no QRM, no rag
chews, no indignant pig farmers. Maybe next time in the pre-contest publicity
the change in the suggested frequencies can be highlighted.
AC8GX   Single Op QRP   1,9602014-03-16 07:22:52
First attempt at QRP, use of a elecraft KX3 and a 630 horizontal loop at 50 ft.
I had great time and look forward to my future in QRP
N4OO   Single Op LP   5,0922014-03-16 08:48:48
The 'let's stay above 3800 idea' baffles me. Trying below the window - other
than finding W9RE was a waste of time. Subsequent cq's there went

NX9T   Single Op HP   1,9322014-03-16 10:10:54
I had about an hour for this one this time. So, I got on for about 45 mins to
work a few on 40m and about 15 mins (later in the contest) to work a few more
on 80m. No 20m antenna and only limited time to play this round. I appreciate
the email invite/reminder from Chris, N6WM. With such a busy schedule these
days w/ two teenagers, without that reminder...I might have missed even being
able to join in for what I could do. Thanks Chris.

I've enjoyed the SSB Sprint for over 25 has always been one of my
favorite contests due to it's ability to provide a "4 hour contest"
rush that worked so well into a weekend's "other stuff." I really
hope that we can keep this event infused with both new and returning players so
that it can continue to provide the excitement that only comes with strong
participation numbers. Again, thanks to N6WM for the reminder email. That did
help get me on this time! :) Now I just need to fix the quad so I can get on
the high bands again....

Did I ever mention that I hate phone contests. Well, hate is a strong word -
perhaps I should say that CW is my mode of choice.

First time in a sprint contest. Interesting format and I certainly have room
for much improvement!
