QTCs few and far between. Not many intercontinental QSOS, much less
QTC-signal-level intercontinental QSOs. A big-fat disappointment because QTCs
are half the fun.

Some good periods but pretty slow band conditions.
Ten meters was open here trans equitorial but very few JA and AS stations QRV
on that band. 15 was generally good, 40 at local sunrise as usual was strong
to EU and 20, mostly quiet, did have a few openings to EU.

Thanks for the calls as always. I hope I brought some smiles providing
probably the only signal from VK?

I left 310 points on the table because I didn't do enough homework to figure out
how to make the QTC operation work. Too much confusing stuff in there for a
first time look. I truly enjoy sending QTCs in the CW contest -- I don't know
why I let this get away from me. Hate to lose points so easily won. Another
of life's little lessons.

The bands were truly ugly! In spite of that it was fun -- how can you attend a
RTTY contest and not have FUN when you're running N1MM+.

Thanks for the Qs. 73, Vic, W4VIC

Wasn't able to spend as much time as I would have liked.
Fair opening W9<>EU on Saturday, but nothing on Sunday.
Spent a bunch of time fixing broken stuff, getting ready
for SS Phone and more importantly, CQWW CW.

I didn't plan to play in this contest, but found myself with some time to play.
Got mostly NA/SA stations Saturday, then lots of Europeans Sunday morning.
Surprised myself by making an 80m QSO; 15m opened for the morning.

Next time I'll figure out the QTC thing and be ready...

WS7I/4(@W4AAW)   M/S HP   2,593,6382016-11-13 16:52:57
Only one word to describe this one - WOW! A Totally Remote effort.

With a solar flux of 78, an A index of 19 and the K at 3, (and later A=23,
K=4) you would not expect these kind of numbers to produce record scores
especially for a contest that has been around for 44 years (the first WAE
RTTY Contest was in 1972). But at 1542Z on Sunday, Team W4AAW operating
remotely as WS7I/4, unofficially went past the current North American
Multi-Single record of 2,071,144 points set by W0LSD in 2012. From there we
willed 20 meters to continue to produce QSOs and QTCs and the band didn't
let us down. We had to rely mainly on 20 on Sunday because 10 and 15 were
dead for all practical purposes and we had already sucked them dry of
multipliers. Europe did eventually start going away on 20 but the damage was
done - we had destroyed 20 meters and obliterated the old record.

Yes, 20 was the money band but it was only good when the sun was up. At
night, the low bands were pretty good to us too. 40 meters produced
excellent runs into Europe and 80 produced an abundance of European
multipliers to boot. 15 was good briefly on Saturday and there were good
multipliers found on 10. However, both 10 & 15 suffered terribly from the
horrible numbers.

What makes this result so satisfying is how it came to be. Earlier this
year, Mike W4AAW, started assembling a group of gung ho RTTY contesters to
operate his totally remote contest station. Over the course of just a few
months, we seemed to have figured out this remote contesting thing (or so we
think), and now have unofficially set two North American records in a row
(also JARTS last month). But this story isn't so much about the operators
listed below, who turned in a gutsy performance this weekend, but it's more
about the other operators on this team - the CW and SSB guys - who welcomed
us into the fold and have played a major role in helping us get up to speed
by providing excellent technical support and donating top-line equipment.

To be commended are guys like John K3TN who furnished the K3 on position 2
and who did extensive load testing on the system before the contest to help
eliminate audio dropouts on the network. And Rick N1RM who recently supplied
the team with a new amplifier for position 3 so it could be identical to
position 1. Rick also supplies us with the VPN router configuration file for
all of us to connect remotely to the network. Rowland, K4XD, keeps our
website (remotecontesting.com) and its interactive operator schedule
up-to-date. I know there are others too and they all deserve a big thanks
from us hotshot RTTY contesters who seem to screw things up so often that
Mike must be pulling his hair out.

The Internet connection was solid the entire weekend and I'm not 100% sure
on this, but I don't think we blew anything up. Thanks to all the operators
who worked us and especially those who exchanged QTCs. We sure appreciate
it. Thanks to DARC for sponsoring the most interesting RTTY contest of the
year. QTCs are king! Thanks to Jay for allowing us to use his call.

Then there's the guy who puts it all together - the master of it all - Mike
W4AAW. Without his genius, we wouldn't get to have all this fun. It takes a
special kind of guy with considerable patience and top-notch technical skill
to put this whole package together each contest. Thank you Mike from all of
us remote RTTY contesting rookies who seem to go out of our way to make your
life miserable during RTTY contests.

Lite and leasurely S&P operation!

Seems to me that the bad was bad or there were few Europeons for a WAE contest.
Even the spots did not show many. North America was well reprocented, however
one cannot exchange QTCs with own continent.

I enjoyed the contest and the QTCs when the signals were strong enough for good
copy.

N1MM+ seems to have a bug where it sometimes awards 0 points per QTC. This is
fixed if you rescore the contest.

I was amused by the ops who sent cut numbers for the report (5NN vs. 599). Did
they think this would shorten their exchange time? HI

Once or twice I got confused trying to copy weak signals. I called a VE3 on
80M, but wound up working Tim N3QE! Not sure how that happened.

The SS call history file was still in N1MM's memory, so PVRC members were
flagged. GO PVRC!

N3QE   Single Op HP   1,216,1522016-11-13 17:04:02
I had set myself a simple goal - beat my score from last year!

But I knew it would be tough going. Last year substantial mult and Q
contributions came from both 15M and 10M and I expected pickings on those bands
to be slim this year.

So the only way to do it was to blow through my Q, QTC, and mult numbers on
80M, 40M, and 20M. And boy did those pay off!

Comparing 2015 to 2016:
2015 2016
---- ----
80M Q+QTC 65 146
40M Q+QTC 237 375
20M Q+QTC 540 1363

80M Mults 96 136
40M Mults 144 156
20M Mults 134 150

And to top it all off... it did not hurt this year that 15M was open pretty
nicely Saturday morning to EU.

Net result: 2015=1.12M, 2016=1.22M!

It is remarkable how each morning the points add up on 20M and 15M ... and each
evening how the mults add up on 80M and 40M!

Thanks for all the Q's! And especially the QTC's!

Tough on high bands, not much EU activity heard over the pole on 20M and thin JA
mult production. Still had fun pretending it was a domestic contest.

Here in central Minnesota Europe was a very difficult circuit. Many USA contacts
helped prevent total boredom with this event. Can someone explain why so many
keep pressing F1 rather than trying to extract a call sign from the code
reader?

Also, my beam was down for maintenance.

Hope to do better next year.

interesting seeing the other side of the QTC exchange.

Thanks for the Q's.

A few Qs now and then. Having a terrible time with QTCs: running low power and
not being heard that great makes it hard to convince others that you can
actually exchange QTCs without major pain...

First serious effort in 15 years. Great fun but QTC's were a nightmare. Not
sure right now if I will ever do this contest again.

Highlight: Finding KH6KG at 4:30am local as the only signal heard on the 40

Thanks to all for the contacts.

Kansas St. U/W0QQQ mid-'70s alums Brad W0CO and Bruce K0BJ had their first
experience at Ken W0LSD's M2 LostCreekCabin.com Although Brad lives in Pitkin
only 20.4 miles from the cabin, his drive was 95 miles! Bruce had a 5.5 hour
drive from the flatlands.

W0LSD has been the NA Multiop winner most of the past many years. The stinky
condx this running left us with a few more Qs than last year, less than 90% the
QTCs and less than 40% the mults! Eastern USA didn't suffer as much with EU etc
and we're sure WS7I/4 outscored us.

Bruce's Thai daughter-in-law Teay kept us well-fed. Ken's cabin on the slopes
of Mt. Princeton has great takeoff conditions (but let's not talk about
VK/ZL...) and stunning views. Bruce and Teay made three trips to Mt. Princeton
Thermal Pools, only 3 miles away.

From the 100% Grand Mesa Contesters crew of "W0LSD, High in the
Rockies" - tnx for the Qs and QTCs.

K3TN   Single Op HP   131,4092016-11-14 02:45:42
Have been having balun overheating problems, so I mainly used the WAE RTTY as
way of testing fixes - sending RTTY QTCs is a great key down test, even at
500w. Got sucked in a bit - fun to be able to receive QTCs for a change,
although in RTTY not quite that challenging.

K3TN's rule of QTCs: when you tune across a station sending QTCs, he will
always be on the first or second QTC, even though the laws of probability say
differently.

My second WAE RTTY. Improvement over last year, but propagation did not help
much. 10 meter definitely dead, 15m not in great shape.
Slow contest, and that QTC thing helps much to destroy rates...but it's the way
it works. On Sunday many stations just were not willing to cope with that mess,
so that I was left with many unsent QTCs. No problem, and thanks for the QTCs
and the QSOs. See you soon! Ciao, 73 de Fabio IZ4AFW / IO4W / NZ1W

Thanks to everyone for all the QSOs and QTCs. All I can say is what a
difference a year makes (to the operator especially).

Delayed too long before starting to exercise the QTC option in earnest. But
other than that, things went very well despite flat to slightly disturbed
conditions. Saturday was better than Sunday for propagation.

Thanks again to Dave, K1TTT for use of his station.

Enjoyable as usual. First time this contest with N1MM+ so it took a bit of
retraining. No equipment concerns. Band conditions not really good. Was
surprised at the early activity on 80 M.

Thanks for all the QSOs. All are appreciated. Also, thanks to all who were
willing to receive/transmit QTCs - much appreciated.

Had several issues with N1MM+ in trying to receive QTCs. First was caused by
trying to operate non-scrolling in the receive window. N1MM+ would lock up and
had to be restarted. Second was when clicking on scrambled received QTCs, a run
time error occurred. This happened several times towards the end of the
Contest. Doubt the "towards the end of the Contest" had anything to
do with the run time error being generated. To get back to using N1MM had to
close the QTC window without being able to save any of the QTCs that had been
received.

Still, even with the N1MM+ problems and having to use scrolling on the received
windows in order to receive QTCs, the Contest was fun as it always has been.
Look forward to next year's WAE RTTY Contest.

A lot of fun with the QTC game this weekend. N1MM+ with two decoders (MMTTY and
2Tone) worked flawlessly, most of the time what was missing on one window,
being copied OK on the other. We know how poor the propagation is these days,
but looking to the final result and to the number of QTC-s, I should be happy.
Unfortunately I did not plan right the rest periods (choosing to be QRV at some
slow rate hours), so I reached the 36 hours limit with 3 hours before the end
on the contest, just when 40 m was opening towards USA. It was a tight race
with UW3U, shoulder to shoulder on CQContest.net/live scores, until I had to go
QRT due to 36 hrs limit. Congrats to Dmitry for excellent result. See you all
in CQ-WW-CW. 73, Alex YO9HP

GUØSUP   Single Op LP   249,2602016-11-14 09:43:28
We had gale force winds and rain all the week, and my 80m inverted L was looking
in bad shape, but I wasn't able to get out and fix it before the contest.
However, it did work, although the SWR was about 1.8:1, so it wasn't as bad as
I had expected.

I decided to run with N1MM+ for the first time in this contest (had used it for
others), and quickly found some issues with the QTC handling. I thought it was
me, but it seems that others have had the same issue.

In view of that, this was a bit of a learning curve for me, although it wasn't
as bad as I had expected.

Conditions were a little odd, with W9/0's loud one minute, then working G/ON/PA
on 20 & 15m. I was quite surprised to work ZL3PAH who was a good signal
here, but I heard no VK's or JA's.
The less than "good" conditions meant that 20m was extremely busy.
When I was S&P, I had several stations following me and calling me, and I
think more than a few took the report for me from the station I was calling to
be my report to them.
A few later sent me B4 messages, so their logs will suffer!

All in all, not a bad contest, but I was well down on QTC's simply because of
the issues with N1MM.
Hopefully that will get sorted for next year.

Thanks to DARC for my favourite contest of the year, and to all for the
patience and points.

Conditions continued poor, virtually no propagation on 10m, and very weak
stations on 15m with short skip at times.Lower bands better but 40m
disappointing to NA and SA. Thanks to VK3JA for 40 and 20m contacts but no ZL
or JA's worked.

Still getting use to new rig, first contest using FSK, caused initial problems
but afterwards worked well. N1MM QTC worked well just a shame conditions
restricted exchanges.

QTCs are a perversely clever idea, but I have no interest in accumulating them,
so I always use this contest as a test bench for something. Antennas this
year.

My goal was to compare two 20m antennas, an attic dipole more-or-less broadside
N/S, a little bit angled toward Europe, and an outdoor stealth end fed full wave
more-or-less perpendicular to the dipole. The attic antenna is higher than the
outside one. Results were inconclusive, meaning, I guess, that there isn't much
difference.

I plan to run some transmitting tests using the RBN. My guess is both antennas
are equally poor.

It was fun to work an itsy bit of 10m.

Thanks for assisting my tests.

I hadn't intended to do anything more than dabble in this contest due to family
commitments, so I unfortunately didn't bother to learn how to send and receive
QTCs. Due to the aforementioned commitments, I missed most of the prime
operating time to Europe and for 15m - if it was open for more than what I
found. Otherwise, RTTY contests are growing on me!

Had a pretty good time in the WAE RTTY test this year. Band conditions were
fair, was able to work EU on 40, 20, and 15 but only in short spurts it
seemed. Did not realize that I could have exchanged QTC's with other
continents, was thinking that I could only exchange them with EU stations. Oh
well, live and learned, at a cost of a lot of points for me as I worked several
SA stations. I also messed up a couple of incoming QTC's so bad that I had to
let them go as I felt that I was taking too long to correct the mess-ups and
thus holding up the other station. The bands seemed to dry up quite a few
times, so wound up taking several breaks and as a result, only put in 15 total
hours for the weekend. I think overall I did fairly well in the end though. I
wish that would have I had more time at the end of the contest to catch up to
Dave NJ4F and Ted K7OM, but that was my own fault for taking so much time off
hihi. Ted K7OM worked me while I was running, was a pleasure to see him on the
air as usual. Did not hear any other SFCG members, but there were others
working the contest. In the end, I had a really great time and am already
looking forward to next years contest. Perhaps by then I will have mastered the
QTC thing.

I had just got the pro67b mosley up and a problem worked out. I didn't have time
to make a good effort but just played a little. Again I waited to learn how to
use the qtc side of it. I need to get things set up a few days at least in
advanced. The bands were not good a the sfi was 80,14,3 or so. The beam played
good on 15, and 20 but the swr on 40 was a little high. I will try harder to be
ready so a test next time!

last year. I think because I think I finally figured out the qtc stuff , was
able to gat a few and lost a few but I think I have a better handle on it. I am
hoping next year I can do so2r have been reading a lot of stuff and looking at
contest stations that run so2r and picking up stuff from there web sites or
maybe get an invite to play radio at one of those stations........lol The
operating station here is a ft 1000d at 150 watts in to a Mosley TA 33 up about
30 ft or so for 10 15 and 20 meters for 40 I used a 2 element yagi up about 55

and have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
