For the 2003 ARRL 10 M Contest, operators arrived in LT1F by mid afternoon on Friday. It was shocking to see all the aluminum, steel, cables, rotators, ant relays and so on lying on the ground as the result of the damages caused by a tornado a month ago. Almost all the work of more than ten years destroyed by mother nature in a few seconds. After recovering from the filling of sadness, we started to hook everything up. It took no more than 15 minutes to be ready for the contest. Only three out of six 10 M antennas survived the high winds. So our aerials for this contest were as follows: 6 el yagi @ 80 ft. 6 el yagi @ 45 ft. 7 el log periodic @ 80 ft. The Ops were: Luc, LU1FAM (QSO MACHINE) Fabian, LU1FGE (Cw Magic Ears) Jose, LU1FJ (The man behing JVP antennas) Karl, LU1FKR (The best host in the world) Juan, LU3FZW Martin, LU5DX (PizzaMan) Lucila, LU5DX's daughter. The contest started really slow resulting in a first hour of only 73 Qs. The second hour was much better netting 121 Qs. By 03 Z we had 233 Qs in our log. The band closed completely and we decided to go to bed. We got up at 09 Z on saturday just to see the band almost dead. Only a few Europeans were heard and worked. The usually S9+20 EUs were only S3. We worked 348 EUs. It is a tiny numbre when you consider the 886 logged the preious year. At 13 Z the band openned to USA, and more decent rates were achieved. The band again closed at 03 Z on Sunday. The second day was almost a repetition of the first one. On Sunday afternoon, a wind storm hit LT1F once againg, but this time no damages were caused by the 100 Miles/hour winds. After the storm ended PIZZAMAN prepared and cooked a giant pizza, helped by PIZZAMAN's best boy, LU1FKR. LU1FKR spent most of time collecting pieces of steel from the ground and trying to figure out how to build the station again. Considering LU micro and macro economics it will not be an easy task. LU5DX's 7 Y/O daughter had fun listening to the pile ups on SSB and CW, and when condx were not good she headed for the swiming pool. Our QSO machine (LU1FAM) made the best run during the 20 Z hour on Saturday achieving 207 Qs on SSB. Tnx everybody who gave us a call. 73 to all. Happy Hollidays!
